Goma: Release of two AFP journalists after 24 hours of detention
2012-06-05

Albert and Melanie Gouby Kambale, respectively correspondent for Agence France Presse (AFP) in Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu (eastern DRC) and freelance working on behalf of the AFP have regained their freedom, on Monday 4 June 2012 at 6:00 pm local, after 24 hours of detention. The two journalists were released unconditionally by Jean Marc Banza, head of the provincial branch of the National Intelligence Agency (ANR) / Goma. None of business material has been confiscated from the journalists.

Contacted by JED, Albert Kambale said they had been kept in ANR’s facilities for about ten minutes before their release. "We were not questioned and none of our material was seized. The head of ANR just recommended us to work in close liaison with the local authorities before moving to areas under the rebels’ control", added Kambale.

The two journalists were arrested on Sunday 3 June 2012, by some elements from the Armed Forces of the DRC in Jomba and taken to ANR office of Bunangana, a city located 7 Kms from Jomba, before being transferred to NRA /Goma.

They were accused of having conducted interviews with people who did not flee the fight between the regular army and mutineers in Gisiza, a town in Rutshuru, 72 kilometers from Goma.
